Scott Fitzgerald, from the Larches and Savick Boxing Club, revealed his delight at winning a gold medal in the Commonwealth Games.
Scott overcame India’s Mandeep Jangra in the final of the welterweight division in Glasgow to claim the gold medal in his 69Kg weight class. The 22 year old put in a strong performance to clinch the gold medal with a unanimous points victory, as all three judges marked him well ahead of his opponent.
“It is just unbelievable to be honest. It has not really sunk in” Scott said in a one to one interview.
“It was a strong performance. I knew he was highly ranked in the world. I knew what I was up against, but it just got me fired up.”
“I stayed focused, I had help off the psychologist Chris Marshall, who got me focused very well. With the coaches keeping me calm as well, I performed well and I am happy.”
“I’ll push on here for the Olympics hopefully, he added.
“Ideally, they’ll take me on and start preparing me for the Games and in two years I’m sure I’ll be a much better fighter and hopefully go and get a gold there as well.”
