Scott Fitzgerald has been called up to box for England in the Commonwealth games. “I’m absolutely buzzing” he said, upon hearing of his selection earlier this week.
The 2013 ABA national champion, who is a member of Team GB’s elite development squad, thought his chance had gone when he was surprisingly beat by Jack Flatley in this years ABA championships NW final.
However, following am impressive performance at the Algirdas Socikas tournament in Lithuania last month, Scott was informed of his selection by Team GB’s head coach, Rob McCracken. Scott will compete in the wealterweight division (69Kg) for England in the commonwealth games in Glasgow later in the summer.
Scott added, “I thought my chance had gone after the ABA’s.”
The 22 year old believes his defeat was a result of him trying to implement new skills and styles he is learning with Team GB.
“I think I just forgot all the things I’m good at and my dad reminded me of this”, Scott said.
“I’m learning a new style at Sheffield (where Team GB train) and it’s all about mixing it all together . I felt like it was all coming together nicely in Lithuania. I got a silver medal there and I performed will in the final even though I narrowly lost.”
Scott added, “I’ve got six weeks now to prepare. It’s a big opportunity for me and I’m sure I will take it.”
