FORMER European light middleweight champion, Jamie Moore, is to officially open the new Larches and Savick Boxing Club in Preston next week.
Jamie, a former two-time British Champion, Irish Champion, Commonwealth Champion and European Champion will open the £350,000 boxing facility on Friday September 13th 2013. He will be joined by Preston’s ABA champions and GB boxers Scott Fitzgerald and Lisa Whiteside.
One of Jamie’s most high-profile bouts was against Matthew Macklin to take the British Light Middleweight title. Now retired, Jamie continues to support the sport he loves and works as a boxing trainer, building the champions of tomorrow.
The Larches and Savick Boxing Club, built on the site of its old premises in Catforth Road, Preston, is almost double in size, boasts some of the most state-of-the-art boxing and fitness facilities in the North West and has been designated a regional centre of boxing excellence by the ABAE.
In 2012 the club was awarded £75,000 from the Amateur Boxing Association (ABA), £50,000 from Sport England and £12,000 from sported. The new facility was built by Marcus Worthington Group who contributed £225,000 towards the scheme.
The club was set up 11 years ago by former Preston boxers Joe Kilshaw, David Fitzgerald and Jimmy Moon and around 200 children and adults attend the boxing club each week.
Over the years the club has home grown a number of boxers who have gone on to become regional, national and international champions, including Scott Fitzgerald and Lisa Whiteside.
Scott won the British ABA title earlier this year, and is only the second boxer from Preston to win the title. He has also represented England as part of the GB team.
Lisa has won the Women’s national ABA title three times and earlier this year won gold in the European Championship and last year won bronze in the World championship.
Chairman of Larches and Savick Amateur Boxing Club, Joe Kilshaw, said: “We are delighted that Jamie Moore has agreed to official open our new club as he is such a great role model for today’s boxers.
“Our new facilities are modern, spacious and state-of-the-art and mean we are now able to introduce more people to our sport.
“We would like to thank all of our supporters and sponsors for helping to us get this fantastic new club off the ground.”
The centre includes a competition size boxing gym, a fully equipped gym and workout area, male and female changing facilities and showers and is fully accessible for people with disabilities.
